Common Conditions

  • Myopia

Myopia is also known as nearsightedness. It is the inability to focus on objects at a far distance, while close objects appear clear. People with myopia may have difficulty with watching TV or driving. Treatment options normally include glasses, contact lenses, or refractive surgery. While genetics may play a role in this condition, some believe our screen time may be causing the increase in myopia progression in children. Pelham Eye Center can help with early diagnosis and treatment of conditions like myopia.

  • Hyperopia

Hyperopia is also known as farsightedness. It’s a condition defined by the ability to see objects far away, while close objects may appear blurry. Those with hyperopia may pass traditional vision tests that concentrate on distance, but have difficulty focusing with tasks like reading and often have frequent headaches. Hyperopia treatment options usually include glasses or contact lenses. Pelham Eye Center suggests an annual eye exam to properly diagnose and prescribe eye wear to treat conditions like this.

  • Presbyopia

Presbyopia is a natural part of aging and is defined by the decreased ability to focus on close objects due to changes in the natural lenses inside the eyes. Most everyone will experience some degree of presbyopia, usually starting around 40 years of age. Pelham Eye Center recommends annual eye exams to properly diagnose presbyopia and provide treatment options, which usually include glasses or contact lenses.

  • Astigmatism

Astigmatism is a flaw in the curvature of the cornea, the clear covering over the front of the eye. An irregularly shaped cornea causes an inability to focus properly. Symptoms of astigmatism include eye strain, blurred vision, headaches, squinting, impaired night vision, and even double vision. Astigmatism can change or worsen over time. The good news is that astigmatism can be corrected with prescription contact lenses, eye glasses or even refractive surgery in some cases. Pelham Eye Center can help!

  • Cataracts

Cataracts occur when the natural lens inside the eye becomes cloudy. They usually occur with aging, although there are other contributing factors like systemic health conditions, genetics, and trauma. Cataracts must be removed with a surgical procedure, especially when the condition worsens to the point of impairing vision. Pelham Eye Center works closely with experienced surgeons in the area. We can help navigate the entire surgical process and monitor your progress while healing. You don’t have to suffer with cataracts!

  • Glaucoma

Glaucoma is an eye disease that can affect all ages but is typically found later in life. It is usually caused by increased eye pressure that damages the optic nerve. If left untreated glaucoma can be quite serious, sometimes resulting in blindness. Genetics play a role in your risk for this disease. Because this disease progresses slowly with few noticeable symptoms, early detection and treatment is vital in reducing risk for blindness. Pelham Eye Center recommends annual eye exams to find and treat diseases like this as soon as possible.

  • Dry Eye Syndrome

Dry Eye is a condition that can be quite uncomfortable. If you’re afflicted with dry eyes, you’re likely dealing with chronic symptoms of stinging, burning, red, irritated eyes. You’re also likely plagued with blurred vision and eye fatigue. Often dry eye sufferers have difficulty with wearing contact lenses. Beyond these annoying symptoms, if left untreated dry eye can result in increased chance for infection and even permanent damage or scarring. There are many treatments for dry eye, and as with most things, early diagnosis is key. Suffer no longer. Schedule a consultation with Pelham Eye Center today and get relief!

  • Retinal Disordes

The retina, the very back part of the eye, is responsible for detecting light and sending images to the brain. Causes for retinal disorders include genetics, aging, trauma, or systemic conditions like diabetes and hypertension. Unfortunately, problems in the retina often lead to vision loss, which may or may not be permanent, so timely diagnosis and treatment is crucial. Some common retinal disorders we routinely manage include diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, retinal tears or detachments, and vein occlusions. We have integrated the latest technology in our office to be able to diagnose and treat various retinal problems. Pelham Eye Center recommends annual eye exams so these dangerous conditions can be managed.

  • Eye Infections

Conjunctivitis, commonly known as “pink eye,” and keratits, an infection involving the cornea, are quite common. Usually these conditions are caused by microbial pathogens such as viruses or bacteria. Acute episodes cause red, painful eyes with light sensitivity and discharge or tearing. These conditions require prompt treatment with medication and/or in-office treatments. Luckily, we are well-experienced at managing eye infections at Pelham Eye Center!
